Andrea Dasilva

About me

My name is Andrea Dasilva and it would be my privilege to help you re-discover your true potential, your confidence, your abilities and strengths that are and have always been with you – they are just not always easily seen or accessible. Especially when the going gets tough. Oftentimes, these crises are actually opportunities in really good disguises. Personally and professionally, these words certainly ring true for me!

More about me

In my youth, I was a typical “Type A personality”: stressing out big time over little things, keeping my emotions tucked deep inside, and closed off to new experiences. However, being diagnosed with a medical condition resulted in a lot of changes. Fortunately, my counsellor in high school was really helpful with regard to helping me navigate all this; I consider my experiences with him to have inspired me to pursue a career in counselling. As well, my faith has been very important to me and instrumental to my healing and improvement.

I completed my undergraduate and graduate degree programs at the University of British Columbia and with this training and education, I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor in good standing with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. I am also a qualified professional of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Before graduating, I used to do a lot of volunteer work on Crisis Lines.

In sessions, I use an eclectic mix of therapeutic approaches, tailoring each session to the needs, values, interests, and abilities of each individual client. I draw from the theories I have been trained in: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), body awareness, and EMDR. Sessions with me are client-focused and strengths based. A little humour is often sprinkled in, too – being able to laugh with (not at) our experiences can itself be relieving!

In a collaborative, compassionate, and non-judgemental way, sessions with me are often focused on appreciating and living in the present moment while still acknowledging the very real concerns and big emotions that might have brought you in to treatment. It is at this point that we can begin working on developing new strategies for responding to (rather than reacting against) distressing circumstances and thoughts. We’ll stack your mental wellness tool-kit so that you feel confident to approach the world – from a differentresilient vantage point.

Ultimately, it would be wonderful to help you to (re)discover a path through suffering to arrive at and re-connect with a more fulfilling and harmonious life. This path was with you all along – it just needed a little dusting off
